ATHLETICS
HASTINGS MEETING TO-NIGHT. The Hastings Amateur Athletic ar.d Cycling Club holds its electric light meeting, commencing at S o'clock, tonight. when, in addition to th© usual sporting events an exhibition of basketball will be given. Basketball is a fine sport for girls and one in which Hawke’s Bay and Hastings girls have proved very successful. It has not so. far had the amount of publicity given it that it deserves but- this occasion should do much to popularise it. Handicaps for the various events were published last night and one of the notable features of the fields was their size. Very large entries have been received for four of the cycle events while the entries for the other, the novice cycle handicap, show that the sport is gaining much favour. The 100 yards has mni’v well-known names entered and again the field is large three heats having to h© run while the longer distances are equally well supported.
