COOLIDGE’S BUDGET MESSAGE
EXPENDITURE FOR DEFENCE 1800 ’PLANES IN FIVE YEARS. Washington, Dec. 5 President Coolidge, delivering the Budget message to Congress, stated that 625,000,000 dollars will be available for expenditure for defence purposes. The present estimates carry 48,000,000 dollars for the increase of the navy, providing for all projects authorised by Congress, excepting three submarines and twelve destroyers authorised in 1916, for which no funds are at present desired. Navy craft under construction in 1929 will comprise two submarines and eight cruisers, of which two will be practically completed in 1929Ample funds are provided for the modernisation of the battleships Nevada and Oklahoma, and the necessary funds are provided to continue the five-year programme. It is expected by nearly the end ck the coming fiscal year to have 696 nlanes of the scheduled 1000. Additional funds to those already appropriated are also recommended for dirigibles. Estimates for the Armv Air Corps provide for the continuance of the five-year programme, based on 1800 ’pianos nt the end of five years. -(A. and N.Z.)
