THE NEW COMET

OBSERVABLE IN HASTINGS. TRAVELLING RAPIDLY The new comet observed last Sunday in Wanganui, was plainly visible to the naked eve in its decline on the southern sky at Hastings last night * at 9 o’clock and for a long time afterwards The sky was beautifully dear and everything was favourable for an unobstructed view of the nhenomenon, which had the appearance of a distant rocket falling obliquely in the direction of the earth and. though its , tail was bright in the immediate wake of the nucleus, bushing out into a misty nebulosity at its termination, the spectacle would have" been much more brilliant were it not for the conflicting light of the moon The comet was travelling very rapidly, and at 10.30 it was down low, well on its way towards the horison. the tail being then much fainter. Three-quarters of an hour later the visitant had disappeared below the neighbouring housetops, but those whose were in a position to watch its full flight say it was on the horizon at 11.30 p.m.
