COUNTY AFFAIRS
WAIPUKURAU COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of th# Waipukurau County Council was held on Saturday. Present:—Crs. A. C. Russell (chairman), B. J, McCormick, J. H. Kibblewhite, W- 15. Fleming, M. Tansey, A. W. Elliott, L. M. Monckton. W. T. and W, J. Edgecombe. The Prime Minister acknowledged receipt of the resolution forwarded by tne Council, expressing appreciation of the sentiments expressed. The Council’s communication would lie handed to the Minister of PublicWorks. FARMERS AND LORRY LICENSES, The County Traffic Inspector wrote re licensing of a farmer’s motor lorry, i.e., that of Mr Walter Stoddart, through overloading the vehicle. Considerable correspondence Had passed between the inspector and Mr Stoddart on this subject, with the result eventually that the license fee of £lO was paid. The chairman said that this case and that of other farmers similarly situated had his sympathy, as he did not think that this class traffic was to be compared with that of a regular carier who paid £3O per annum.
Cr Kibblewhite held that steps should be taken to have farmers using lorries solely for their own requirements exempted from the nayment of fees. Cr Tansey proposed a resolution, seconded by Cr. W. J. Edgecombe, and carried, to the effect that the Public Works Department be asked to amend the' Motor Vehicles Act by exempting owners of motor lorries who use same for their own purpose and not for hire, from the payment of a fee as applied to vehicles loaded up to a total of three tons, it being found that some county ratepayers are suffering a hardship under the present regulations. OIL AGREEMENT. The Brutish Imperial Oil Company communicated with the Council in regard to a motor pump hire ment. On the motion of Cr. Kibblewhite, seconded by Cr. Elliott it was decided that steps be taken to have a clause in the earlier agreement deleted PROTECTION OF HARES. The Hawke's Bay Acclimatisation Society intimated that at a reccut meetin-- the executive had :. ed its decision as to the protection of hares, and at present no further action is being taken in that direction. The Department of Internal Affairs forwarded a reply .to repri - sentations on the same subject. It was stated that no communication had so far been received from the Acclimatisation Society as to asking for the protection of hares. GENERAL. The Medical Officer of Health advised that an increased contribution, by 60 per cent., would be required as to tne salary-of the inspector. The No. 5 District Highways Council forwarded a copy of the main highways construction estimates. also main highways map, and the board’s annual report. The Main Highways Board wrote in regard to a hire purchase agreement returned completed. This applied to a 1-ton Morris truck. The Public Works Department advised as to metalline proposals: d.forwarded draft regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act. 1924. It was decided to dispense with the January- meeting, as usual.
