The “Patron Saint of Chemistry” was the description applied to the modern flapper by Dr. E. F. Armstrong, director of the British Dyestuffs Corporation at a London gathering of chemists. The flapper was, he said, the chief purchaser of synthetic jewels, leather, dress material, "hair-sheen" and what-not.
