WAIPUKURAU
NEWS AND NOTES. A very cold snap was experienced on Thursday when rain fell heavily throughout the day. Conditions improved during the night and early next morning, but later there was a resumption of the showery weather, while the temperature remained iow. The effect upon newly-shorn sheep is of course disadvantageous, and where early hay making has been carried out the unsettled state of the elements of late has proved a special handicap. To-date this season 4653 bales of woil have been dispatched per rail from Waipukurau to shipping or wool sale centres. Throughout the Hawke’s Bay Education District the annual standard VI. examinations are now being held for certificates of proficiency or competency. Pupils who have been successful in the results so far known include the following from Hatuma: Proficiency: Lawrence Gordon. Ena Kyle, Mabel Patterson. Competency: Jean wilson. A most successful meeting off the Court Ruahine /Foresters Order) was held on Thursday night, when visitors from Court Heretaunga. Hastings were in attendance, and there was a large assemblage of local brethren. The occasion served to reveal the keen interest centred in Forestry. Considerable amusement was created at the presentation of the children’s operetta “Snow White” on Thursday night by an unrehearsed incident during the interval between acts 1 and 2, when a very young worshipper at the Charleston shrine entertained the audience with an ex position of a dance movement that is a popular craze. The spontaneous performance was a tribute to both the oright music and the call of the American “art.” The interest displayed by the audience and subsequent hearty plaudits, caused the little performer some wonderment, but she smilingly proceeded till the orchestra eeased.
Mr and Mrs M. R. Wallace, former residents of Waipukurau are at present visiting friends in the town before returning to their home in Christchurch. Advice has been received by cable of the death at Montreal. C-raada. on Monday of Isabella Cameron mother of Mrs A. J. Campbell, of Takapan. “SNOW-WHITE.” CHILDREN’S OPERETTA. It was unfortunate that such a fine effort as that sponsored by Mrs Balfour-Rowan, and upon which so much talent, and time as well as attention to detail, had been expended, having also the laudable object in view of aiding the Waipukurau Hospital Patients’ Christmas fund, did not meet with a more favourable reception in the matter of weather conditions. However, very appreciative audiences were a compensating feature for the absence of as large audiences as such occasion merited, and gratifying in the circumstance of opposition from the elements. The delightful operetta staged in the Municipal Theatre on Thursday night and again last evening, unfolds a story that makes an appeal to all those who appreciate juvenile romance. and the presentation of “ Snow-Whife, ” the libretto of which is by Shapcott-Wensley, and music byJ. L. Roeckel, represented an artistic triumph for the local producer (Mrs Balfour-Rowan), as well as being a credit to the many young performers.
