The tender of the engine on the 4.46 p.m. train from Johnsonville to Wellington, one live stock waggon and one car were derailed yesterday. Nobody was injured. The passengers were transhipped. Ho was ro captured at Onebnnga last night. The prisoner is a habitual criminal, undergoing four years’ imprisonment -for theft and forgery. The axle of a coat waggon on tho mixed train from Wanganui broke when approaching Groatford last night, but fortunately it was observed before anything serious happened on the permanent way. The damaged truck was jacked off the lines, and traffic was resumed after throe and a half hours’ delay. A recent Wellington city purchase is that of the To Aro House Drapery Company Ltd. premises in Cuba street by the Hannah estate. The purchase price is £65.000. The property, which has a two-storv wooden building on it, has a frontage of Jo4ft. din. to Cuba street and )45ft 2in to Dixon street. A well-known Kangitikei farmer, whose name was suppressed, was fined £2O and prohibited from taking liquor at the Marton Court, this morning on a charge of driving a car while drunk. The police asked for cancellation of tho license, which was refused. It was stated that the accused had previously been warned.— (Press Association.)

The Patoa Press states that the residuary estate of the late Hunter Shaw-, formerly of Crescent Falls. Whenua kura is to bo distributed among such charitable institutions as his trustee shall appoint, with the proviso that no instiution whose primary object is the advancement of education, or tho teaching of religion, shall benefi> thereunder. An unusual case, and understood to be the first of its nature in New Zealand. was heard by Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M.. at. Hamilton yesterday, C. L. Innes and Co., brewers, of Hamilton. were charged with manufacturing and offering for sale alo containing more than the regulation strength of chloride. A fine of £5 was imposed, the Magistrate commenting that there seemed to be no systematic analysis made of liquor sold.

There are 32 applicants for the position of headmaster of tho Napier Boys’ High School rendered vacant by Mr Armour’s appointment to Wellington College. The Board of Governors have decided to consider them at a special meeting next Monday evening when a selection will lie marie for further consideration. Tho final appointment will probably not be made for another ten days. At the request of the patients of the Napier Hospital, the Hastings Orphans’ Orchestra and Conacrt Party will pay a visit to the hospital to-morrow afternoon, and will render, in Stokes’ Ward, a varied programme of musical and vocal items. A col lection will be taken up among the public for the hospital funds. The cars will leave tho Hastings Post Office at 1.45 p.m.

The Girls’ Friendly Society will hold a sale of work and social in the St. Matthew's Schoolroom on Thursday next. December Bth, commencing at 2 p.m. The stalls include jumble, needlework, cakes > sweets, vegetables and produce and flowers. These will be in charge of the associates and members who have been working for some time to make this sale a success. There will be competitions for cake-making and sweets, particulars of which may be obtained from the secretary. Father Christmas will be- in attendance with a bran tub. In the evening a free and easy social will be held to which tho public arc heartily invited. Concert items and many amusing competitions should make the evening a very enjoyable one. Afternoon tea and supper will be served for a small charge, and the admission to the schoolroom is free.
