FABULOUS VALUE
DEAO sea SALTSf
AN "ASTRONOMICAL” ESTIMATE.
London, November 30.
In the House of Commons. Sir Ormsby-Gore said that four applications had been received for a Dead Sea salts concession, and that it had been decided to grant a concession to two gentlemen named Tullock and Novomayskv. based on a joint option. Negotiations were proceeding concerning the terms, conditions, and guarantees. There was no proposa that the Government should obtain a controlling interest b - the purchase of shares. Mr Howard Burv; Is the Government aware that the potash deposits alone are worth fourteen thousand millions sterling, of which German, so far has the monopoly, and will the Government consider the acqmr ing of a controlling interest in view of its vital importance to the Empire? Sir Ormsby-Gore: I think the fig ures quoted are astronomical. Whatever the salts are worth, the processes of obtaining and marketing them are experimental and speculative. Ido not think it would lie advisable to ask the taxpayer to invest in such an enterprise.
