NEWS AND NOTES. The next meeting of the Waipuku rau County Council will Do held on Saturday. The meeting of the Foresters’ Lodge to-night is of particular interest as members of Court Heretaunga, ol Hastings, are visiting the locai nidge. A heavy frost was experienced in Waipukuruu yesterday morning and vegetable gardens suffered considerably from, the unexpected visitation. One keen enthusiast reports that bis potatoes tomatoes, and beans were damaged’ to a marked extent. Following upon a night of very boisterous weather—fully justifying the Government meteorologist's tore east—and a morning that was not pleasant at the outset, fine, but chilly conditions prevailed for the greater part of Tuesday. The weekly mar ket and shopping activities attracted as large an assemblage of country residents as is customary. Mr Edward Doube in motoring from his home in Racecourse road on Tues day morning met a motor lorry near the residence of Mr V. Olsen at the foot of Reservoir road and in order to avoid a collision that appeared imminent appears to have turned his car sharply aside, with the result that it crashed into a fence. Mr Doube escaped uninjured, but the cowl, windshield, and hood of the car were da', aged somewhat. The Finance Committee of the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board met yesterday and dealt with the several tenders received for various undertakings, the following being a'ocepted:—Transport of poles, J. G. Blair (Waipukurau); extensions to reticulation, Jas. Ashby (Otane). These contracts are in terms of schedule conditions as to the board*s requirements -from time to time. PERSONAL. Mr Wilfred Hopkinson. who underwent an operation in the hospital last week, continues to make good progress towards recovery. The condition of Mrs Huntley Walker, who entered the hospital last week and underwent an operation on Thursday, has been causing considerable anxiety. In reply to inquiries yesterday afternoon the information available was to the effect that her condition had not changed.

It is pleasing to report that Mr H. C. Mason, who is undergoing treatment in the Hospital for injuries received on Monday through the oxplosion of petrnl tank, is making very satisfactory progress towards recov ery.

There was a representative attendance of town and country mourners at the funeral obsequies of the late Cr Chas. Lewis which took place yes terday afternoon. The Rev Janon E. D. Rice conducted the impressive service at the graveside.

Mr Tom Hislop, of Otane, the young man inqured in the head in a motor cycle mishap on Tuesday evening when his and the machine ridden by Mr Mustchin, of Waipawa, came into contact as the cyclists were proceeding from Waipukurau towards Waipawa. is making good progress towards recovery. He is an employee of Messrs Turner and Butler, motor engineers. Waipukurau.

A most enjoyable evening was spent on Friday last at Porangahau, when Mr and Mrs McMurray were farewelled, prior to their departure from the district, after a residence of over 12 years. The evening took the form of a social and dance and a very large number of friends were present. During the evening, Mr Clifton, on behalf of the residents of Porangahau and district, presented Mrs McMurray with a handsome toilet set, and Mr McMurray with a solid leather suit-case and in loing so, spoke in high praise of the ser-

vices rendered by Mr and Mrs McMurray to the district. Mr Clifton said that Mr and Mrs McMurray would be very much missed, and he wished them every success in the future. Mr McMurray suitably replied, and a most enjoyable evening concluded by the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." Mr and Mrs McMurray left Porangahau on Monday for their new home.
