ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
'Per Press Association). The inquest on Andrew Kidd ano William Hopwood, the two men who were killed in the blasting accident at Burkes on Monday, was opened yesterday. Evidence of identification was taken, and the inquiry was adjourned sine die.
The body of George Newman, aged 60 years, was found hanging from a tree m a small plantation neai Timaru last night. The deceased had been in ill-health for some time. He was a married man with a grown-up family. Grave injuries were sustained by a boy of 14, Russell Heckler, who was knocked down by a car while cycling on Monday night in New Plymouth. His injuries cqpsist of a leg broken in at least two places, a broken arm and general superficial injuries. He is in hospital in a serious condition. A bushman. Charles Taylor, aged 20. sustained injuries whilst working in the bush at Motu. Gisborne and was admitted to hospital, Polly Wattle, a married woman, was thrown from a horse at Kaitaratahi, Gisborne, and admitted to hospital in a serious condition. Daniel George Moore, a wellknown Marlborough wool-classer, aged about 60 lost his life during the night as a result of the tent m which he was sleeping at F. W. Hille’s Riverlands property catching fire. No one witnessed the outbreak, but the tent was found smouldering this morning, with Moore’s body lying face upwards. Death was evidently due to heart failure or suffocation, as the body was not seriously burned. The deceased was engaged in classing at the station during shearing operations.
