“BUY BRITISH GOODS”

NAPIER COUNCIL'S SLOGAN. PURCHASES FROM LOCAL TRADERS. “That in future where possible, all goods required by the Borough Council be of British manufacture and that they be purchased from Napier traders, and that the Town Clerk, borough engineer and electrical engineer be so instructed.” The above resolution, on the motion of His Worship the Mayor (Air. J. Vigor Brown) was agreed to by the Napier Borough Council last ’evening. The Mayor pointed out that a habit was creeping in to get articles from Palmerston L'lorth, Wellington or from some other centre when they could be purchased locally just as well. It was a matter of principle. The people paid the rates and in turn the Council should do whatever business it could with them. As for supporting the British manufacturer, he thought they were all of one opinion. Cr. J. C. Bryant, in seconding the motion, said that it was not a hah' of the Council to overlook the Britislmanufacturer. Every opportunity was taken to give him the preference. Only recently the Council had a British tender that was higher than the other tenders but the contract was given to the British firm. Cr. J. W. Callaghan said that while he was just as keen as anyone as for as preference to Britain was concerned, he was afraid that it would be a mistake for the Council to place itself in the position where the British manufacturer could fix whatever price he liked because, of no outside competition. In referring to the contract mentioned bv Cr. Bryant. he thought that the Council had gone as far as any local body could be expected to go. As to the local traders he did not think that there was any need for the Council to tie its hands. . ~ Cr. H. J. Harman, in supporting Cr. Callaghan, feared that by adopting the principle the Council might later have to pay fabulous prices for its purchases. The Mavor pointed out that ny helping Britain they would be helping themselves. Cr Bryant said that the resolution merely affirmed a principle, and would not, in any way tie the Council’s hands. , ~ On being put to the meeting the resolution was carried.
