GOOD MOTORISTS
DOMINIONS' NEEDS. DUKE OF YORK TELLS. London, Nov. 14. Presiding at the “Safety First” Council of the World Motor Transport Congress, the Duke of York declared that the Dominions welcomed the right type of motorist. They had as little use for him if he was thoughtless, or if he was a coward, he added. He must be able to use his wits and his eyes to meet hardships, and courageously to overcome obstacles. Forty nations attended the congress, which is discussing every aspect of road traffic. The Australian delegates are Sir Granville Ryrie, Mr, F. L. McDougall, Major Bowe, Mr. Arthur Davies, Air. W. G. Watson, and the AgentsGeneral for the States. Mr. Ronald Harvey is representing New Zealand. Air. AlcDougall said that Australia’s wheat, wool and mineral industries depended on efficient transport to carry large loads more cheaply than horses, which at present cost from Kid to IBd a ton a mile, against America’s I4d to 2/- a mile. But America’s motors only cost from 7Jd to 9d a mile, owing to the cheap fuel. Sir Granville Ryrie will next Wednesday read the Aligration Commission's paper on transport problems in Australia.
