TARIFF REVISION

COMMONWEALTH BOARD’S REPORT INCREASED DUTY AGAINST N.Z. BUTTER. SIXPENCE PER POUND. (Received 29,, 8.55 am.) Canberra, Nov. 28. The House of' Aepresehtativea in. creased the duty 6d per pound against New Zealand butter and cheese as recommended in the Tariff Board report tabled to-day. Imports of buiter from the Dominion in the last fiscal year were valued at £500,000. Tho landed cost was 1/6 a lb., whereas a net return of. 1/11,,was necessary to Australian producers. The president and vice-president, of the Primary Producers’ Union left Sydney for Canberra to-day to confer with the Hon, 8. M. Bruce on the question of tariff revision. The president of the union points out that under the existing reciprocal agreement between Australia and New Zealand any change of tariff does not affect New Zealand for six months. It was understood an agreement favourable to the Dominion had already been reached with regard to Australian Hour. It was only reasonable to expect that further progress in the same direction might and ought to deal with the present butter position so that the matter should he •satisfactorily arranged at an early date.
