NAPIER BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL GENERAL BUSINESS. CORRESPONDENCE. The usual meeting of the Napier Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worshop the Mayor (Mr J. Vigor Brown) and Councillors R. W. Goodger, J. C. Bryant, F. Rice, C. I) Cox, A. E. Bedford, J. St. J. Hindmarsh. W. G. Martin. H. J. Harman, J. W. Callaghan, and C. H. Wilkie. The Native Minister advised that the Council’s representations regarding the Tarawera Block and the proposed alienation by the Native owners of their interests therein had been noted and would receive consideration .—Received. The Wanganui Citv Council wrote forwarding a resolution passed bv it protesting to the Government that the proposed petrol tax of fourpence per gallon was excessive; and, further, that the tax should be reduced by one-half and that no exemptions should be granted.—Received ; no action taken. The Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association wrote forwarding a resolution passed by the association inviting the Napier Borough Council to discuss the site at George's Drive as to whether it could be made, a suitable camping area.—Referred to the Reserves Committee to confer with the association. The Hawke's Bay Motor Co.. Ltd., wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the trouble they were experiwith boys on bicycles hanging on to the rear of their omnibuses. —It was pointed out that, under its by-laws, the Council had no jurisdiction in the matter. f GENERAL. The borough enginter was instructed to report on the cost of moving the sheds of the Te Awa Swimming and Life-saving Club into the suggested new position, connecting the sheds with the borough water supply, and installing electric light where required, and also in the motorist camping area. Crs. Martin, Bedford, Harman, Goodger. and the Mayor were appointed a special committee to consider the replies received from property owners regarding the Council’s proposal to acquire land to round off dangerous corners and report to the Council generally on the position regarding the proposals. The Finance Committee reported having further considered the Question of establishing a municipal freezer in Napier, and on its recommendation no further action was taken.
Hydro-electric power had' been maintained during November, with the exception of four stoppages totalling 7 hours 14 minutes. A total of 239,700 units were purchasea, while 40,535 units were generated by the Council’s own plant. During the past month the following stock was slaughtered at tho municipal abattoirs:—Cows 169 (condemned 1). bullocks 170 (2). sheep 1620 (2). lambs 151, pigs 105 (2), ano calves 62. The tender of Samuel Brown, Ltd., for 40 miles of cable was accepted, also that of Arthur D. Riley and Co Ltd., for three 150 k.v.a. Ferranti British transformers.
