THE PICTURE HOUSES

COSY DE LUXE. Ted McNamara, who furnishes much of the comedy relief in “UpsUeam,” a John Ford production for Fox Films at tile Cosy Theatre, got his theatrical start with the Pollard Lilliputian Opera Company, in Australia, and received for hie labours the staggering sum of one ball-crown per week. This is equivalent to sixty cents. He remained with Pollard ten years, and then joined a stock company in Vancouver. B.C. His first stage role in New York was in “Irene,” in which he played Madam Lucy. He scored his biggest hit in “Battling Butler.” He was cast as a wise-cracking fight trainer and the part won him instant acclaim. His best screen part so far was in “What Price Glory?” but his acting in “Upstream” is said to show a vast improvemeht even on that. The supporting picture brines Wallace Beerev ns “Casey at the Bat,” a baseball picture full of humour. MUNICIPAL. “The Sensation Seekers.” the Uni-versal-Jewel now at the Municipal Theatre, is a story of the ultra modern set —not the flapper, please—but her older sister. Lois Weber has made a thoroughly gripping tale and has as his leading characters Billie Dove and Huntley Gordon. “This ultra modern set,” said Miss Weber, “is not vicious. The members are merely seeking freedom of thought and action. In my picture I have put various types. Some of their philosophies are like this: “Wino, woman and song—to-day; don’t be serious, it doesn’t matter:' Let's do what we can while we can; Oh. for a new thrill I’ “On the other hand I have placed characters whose homely philosophies are: God is love; do unto others as you have them do unto you. There is a natural conflict between these two classes of people which I do not believe has ever been adequately presented. ‘The Sensation Seekers’ I hope gives this presentation.” The serial will also he shown.
