HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY HAWKE’S BAY’S EASY WIN. WAIROA DOES BETTER IN SECOND STRIKE. The Hawke Cup preliminary match at Nelson Park. Napier, concluded on Saturday, when Hawke’s Bay gained a decisive victory over Wairoa. Hawke's Bay had recorded 591 in its first innings, Wairoa replying with 121. On Saturday Wairoa commenced the follow-on and at the luncheon adjournment had lost no wickets for 54 runs. Upon resumption Barton and Thomas continued their strike but did not remain together long. The visitors showed more enterprise and each succeeding batsman banged hard at the bowling. Following the opening batsmen Heslop. Peni and Wahl opened out their shoulders io score rapidly. Even the “tail’’ wagged a little with the result that Wairoa doubled its previous score, the final reading being 289. This left Hawke’s Bay the victors by an innings and 181 runs.
