NEW ZEALAND APPLES
POPULAR IN BRITAIN. SMALLER SIZES WANTED. Thp fruit export trade was discussed last week by Mr. Everard Hess, a director of Henry Jones Cooperative, Ltd., who is visiting Nelson alter a tour of Great Britain and the Continent. Mr. Ross was primarily interested in watching the sale oi Tasmanian apples in Great Britain and Europe, but he had the opportunity oi seeing several New Zealand cargoes being landed in England and also the disposal oi the apples in the salerooms. He expressed tile opinion that New Zealand apples had gamed a very good reputation on the English markets ,the New Zealand Jonathan being, he thought, of exceptionally fine quality, not always perhaps as highly coloured as West Australian Jonathans, but of better apple characteristics as regards flavour and the ability of the fruit to retain its condition longer from the time of discharge at the docks in England. He predicts a good future for the Jonathan and also for New Zealand Rokewoods, which he found in England were m considerable favour, due, he thought, to their firm condition and the weightiness of the apples. Mr. Ross suggested growers would be enabled to create a goodwill lor their brands if their names or registered marks were shown on the boxes, as was t|ie custom in Tasmania. His firm could sell on name certain growers’ packs al enhanced prices as compared with sales simply described as "Tasmanian apples.” The prohibition of export oi small apples was, in his opinion, a disadvantage to New Zealand growers. There was a large market in London for small apples of coloured varieties and the price usually was a fair one. He found 2)in. apples brought higher values than 2j or 3in. The latter should be shipped to North England ports.
