LATE JUSTICE ALPERS

TRIBUTES FROM BENCH AND BAR. Wellington, November 25. The honour and esteem in which the late Mr Justice Alpers was Held was expressed this morning in the U lb n tes q 1 Bench and Bar at the Wellington Supreme Court, which was crowded. On the Bench were the Chief Justice, Sir Justice Sim. and Mr Justice Frazer, also the exmembers of the Judiciary, Sir FredeDck £ ha pman and Sir Robert Stout, lhe Bar was represented, among others, by the Attorney-General, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston; the Crown Sohcitor, Mr Arthur Fair; Sir John Findlay. Mr M. Myers. K.C.. .mu o A , Gra Z' KC ‘ ■ tlle Native Band (tonrt by Mr Justice Jones and Mr Justice McCormick. The Magistrates’ and the Labour and Justice Departments were also represented. Mrs Alpers and family were in die ladies’ gallery. ;)■ Gray, K.C.. on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society outlined Mr Alpers’ career and extended the sympathy of the Bar to his wife and family and hoped that the sincere admiration and tributes here and in other centres would help to minimise the sense of loss and prove a solace in their grief. Mr Cornish spoke on behalf of the Wellington Law Society. The Chief Justice, Sir C. P. Skerrett, said Mr Alpers was a’ fust ana' upright judge, and had many of the qualities that went to the making of a great judge. His sole desire was the ascertainment of truth and the dispensing og justice, without fear, favour, or affectation. Kindly and courteous, possessed of great literary attainments and vividly interested in the affairs of his fellow men. he had many friends and would be greatly missed. All bore testimony to the manner in which Mr Alpers bore his serious malady and faced the knowledge of his approaching death
