RHEUMATISM

“SIGN OF STRENGTH.” SIMPLE CURES. “Rheumatism is terribly prevalent to-day, and produces a disastrous epidemic of absence from work; so that through rheumatism the nation loses hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.” said Mr. Eustace Miles in a recent lecture. “Rheumatism is due to many different causes, for it is impossible to assign all the results to; any one cause. On the. other hand, rheumatism is a sign of strength. Those who have in them so much poison that rheumatism will result, must be strong or else they would have died before there is this amount of accumulation! “The uderlying cause seems to be acidosis: that is to say, an over-acid condition of the system which may be due to one or more of many kinds of acid. lam inclined to think that among the most important troubles of the day is acidosis due to excess of carbohydrates (that is to say, of starchy arid sugary foods—what a vast amount of sweets and sugar people eat today!); and, secondly, to fruit-acid, for almost all the fruit that is eaten in this country to-day is intensely acid. “The cures, apart from any special measures and the ensurance of warmth, should include better foods and drinks, and p irticularly an abundance of greenstnf in various forms, and pure notirishm nt. and the practice of deep and full breathing and water-sipping.”
