AIR MAILS

CANADA TO U.S A. SUCCESS ASSURED. Ottawa, October 20. A Montreal-New York air maij service has been proposed by the Unneu States Post Office Department, it is Canadian Post Office Department has learned heer to-day. While the done nothing yet. the matter has become a subject of negotiations which may lead to a daily service between the two cities by which mid-morning mails from Montreal would be delivered in New York city late the same afternoon. The United States is also reaching out to Newfoundland with its air mail service in order to improve the trans-Atlantic time, according to a pi'ess report. EXPERIMENTS SATISFACTORY. The late summer and autumn experiments with air mails from Father Point to Quebec Citv have been almost concluded, and the Post Office Department regards the results as quite satisfactory. Except for minor difficulties, the flights have been successful. The chief obstacle encountered in the speeding up of the mails by seaplane has not been with flying, but with the fact that most of the mail ships arrive over the week-end. A vessel arriving at Father Point can have mails taken by ’plane and sent on to Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg twenty-four hours ahead of the old schedule, but if the mail ship arrive on Friday night or Saturday, delivery can not be made faster on account of the intervening Sunday. SERVICE IS ASSURED. Tile experimental flights so far have been carried on by seaplanes operated by private companies. With the coming of the stormier weather, Royal Canadian Air Force will carry out some investigation work with laud ’planes in connection with the Father Point-Quebec route. The summer of 1928 will undoubtedly find the post office department operating some sort of regular service on the St. Lawrence River, it is staled here by officials.
