The West End was a victim of the worst electric light breakdown London has yet experienced, due to nre in the generating station. The Palace, Westminster, was plunged into darkness, including Big Ben. Members of the House ot Commons struck matches to enable the debate to continue, the flickers auuing to the eerienesj of the scene in the darkened Chamber. Others shouted for candles, and three were found and placed beside the Mace, until Sir Marry E. Brittain arrived with a bagful of candles, which lie handed out. The Speaker finally adjourned the House. Government offices, clubs, stores, and numberless restaurants, offices and flats were affected, but street lamps remained alight owing to thir being able-, to use a duplicated current. Severe operations were going on in a number of hospitals, and the dressers swiftly lighted emergency acetylene lamps and the surgeons completed the operations.—(A. and N.Z.)
