VALEDICTORY
A POPULAR P. AND T. OFFICER. PRESENTATIONS TO MB K. BRUCE. Mr Robert Bruce, who has been a member of the Hastings Post and Telegraph staff for the past eight years, is under orders to proceed to Wellington on promotion, having been appointed to the position of assistant supervisor of postmen in that city, whither he leaves on Monday nextt. Yesterday Mr Bruce was met by his fellow officers at a valedictory gathering, in the course of which the postmaster (Mr W. M. Diamond),, acting on behalf of himself and the staff presented Mr Bruce with a handsome suit case, and in doing so, expressed the congratulations and the best wishes of the entire staff for his future happiness and prosperity. Mr Bruce replied, thanking the postmaster and his comrades for their kind references and their useful gift. Ho was met this morning at tho Grand Hotel by members of the Orphans’ Club, of which body he was a popular member, being a prominent instrumentalist in tho club orchestra. Past Chief Orphan O’Meara, in the unavoidable absence of of Chief Orphan H. W. C. Baird, presented him with a gold-mounted fountain pen, as a small mark of the esteem in which he is held by is fellow Orphans, who all combined in congratulating him on his promotion and in wishing him every good luck in his future. In thanking the assemblage Mr Bruce said that the eight years he spent in Hastings were the happiest in his life, and he felt very sorry to part with his good friends. Tho health of Mr Bruce, which was drunk in brimming glasses brought the reunion to a conclusion. Mr Bruce, during his residence in Hastings, has proved himself, a capable official, who was most courteous to tho public with whom he was in constant touch. Sociallyalso he was very popular and he was one >f the most esteemed members of the Orpans’ Club. He will be much missed in musical circles, as his services as an' instrumentalist has been always at the service of every worthy course.
