MR. AMERY AND PARTY
BUSY TIME AT NEW PLYMOUTH AT WANGANUI TO-DAY. New Plymouth, Nov. 24. Mr. Amery and party arrived at New Plymouth this afternoon, travelling overland from Te. Kuiti and halting bueny at Waitara. At New Plymouth, despite unfavourable weather, they were gtven a warm reception by a large crowd. Mr. and Mrs. Amery spent a busy afternoon. After the reception the party were the guests of the Tourist and Expansion League, and were mo tored to beauty spots and points oi interest about the town. This was followed by a reception by the Victoria League and the Legion oi Frontiersmen. The Opera House this evening wi. packed tor the civic reception. Mr. Amery spoke on the need for Empire co-operation. He discussed immigration problems, and urged upon the Dominion the desirability of keeping young New Zealanders on the land. Despite the fact that Mount Egmont was shrouded in misty rain, Mr Amery left for the North Egmont Hotel at ten o’clock to-night. He intends to start climbing shortly after daylight and hopes to reach the summit, though the indications are to-night that he, as a keen mountaineer, will be disappointed, for there appears little chance that the clouds will lift sufficiently to allow of a clear view. To-morrow Mr. Amery will join the remainder of the party on a special train at Inglewood, en route to Wanganui, where they are due at three p.m. GIRL IMMIGRANTS SUGGESTION TO MRS AMERY Wanganui, Nov. 24. While in Wanganui, Mrs L. S. Amery, wife of the Secretary for the Dominions, will be met by tit® Mayoress and the women’s division of the Farmers’ Union, and a proposal to establish a system of group immi gration will be discussed. The Wanganui members of the division are strong!}’ of the opinion that there is a field in New Zealand for the middle-class English girl, and they believe that a certain number can be placed in the various districts for a specified term, with provision by the Government for a free passage back to England should the girls be desirous of returning when the period has expired. VISIT TO HASTINGS. CIVIC WELCOME THE ONLY FUNCTION. On Saturday morning last His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) conferred with Sir Andrew Russell concerning the visit to Hastings of the Rt. Hon. L. M. Amery and Mrs. Amery and party and he was info'med that they were coming to Hastings for a holiday rest. They would be staying at “Tunanui,” the home of Sir Anrew Russell. Last evening the Mayor reported to the Borough Council that it appeared that it was only possible to arrange for a civic welcome to take place in the Municipal Theatre at 5.30 p.m. on December 16. The Mayor suggested that a committee of the Council be set up to carry out all arrangetfients, including.’—The preparation and presen' > *>n of an official address of
welcome; the arranging for, and the presentation of a bouquet to Mrs. Amery; the Hastings Band to be in attendance, and to play the party through the streets from the statioi to the Municipal Theatre; that cars be obtained for the transport of the party; that, if necessary, and seeing that Mr. Amery is a colonel in the British Army, a guard of honour be arranged to be stationed in Russell street, outside the railway station; that the stage of the theatre be decorated, and suitable accommodation be provided for the guests; that invitations be issued to representatives of public and local bodies, as was done in the case of the Duke of York’s visit; that, if desired, a portion of the theatre be reserved for secondary school children; that Mr. H. M. Campbell. M.P.. be invited to speak on behalf of the surrounding district. The suggestions were adopted without alteration by the Council.
