Mr. J. J. Knight, managing director and formerly editor of the “Brisbane Courier.” is dead. Sir L. Worthington-Evans, accompanied by his wife and daughter, was to leave .London yesterday for a tour of India, from which he is expected to return in the middle of January. Mr. Fl Whitelock, manager of the Hank of New Zealand at Murchison for four and a-half years, has been' promoted to be manager of the Alexandra branch. One of the pioneer settlers of the Forty-mile Hush district, Mr James McKinley. passed away at his residence, Ross street, Woodville, on Wednesday. Captain,J. Mawion, late master of the R.M.S, Makura, has resigned from the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. He joined the Union Company about 22 years ago. and made rapid progress, having commanded several vessels of the Red Funnel fleet. Captain Mawsoii’s home is in Wellington. Mrs. Mary Ann Hooper, widow of the late Mr. Stephen Hooper, of Napier, died at Wellington on Wednesday. The late Mrs. Hooper was 82 years of age, and a daughter of the late Captain Lutteral Morton, of Calcutta. The interment takes place at Napier. The Johannesburg “Star” says: “Alias Gretchen Humphries, who has studied at the Horace Barton Studios, has been awarded the only bursary granted by the University of South Africa for advanced harmony. She was also awarded the only bursary for advanced counterpoint in 1926.” Miss Humphries is a grand-daughter of Mr. ami Airs. A. A. George, of Hastings, and both her parents belonged to Hastings before they went to Africa. After 23 years’ sendee as chief public librarian in AVellington, Mr. H. Baillie is about to retire at the age of 64. Originally a bookseller, Mr. Baillie was appointed to the post of librarian at Newtown in 1901, and two yewrs later was transferred to the Central Library to take charge of the reference room and the cataloguing. In 1904, when Alr. T. W. Rowe resigned, Mr. Baillie succeeded him as chief librarian.
