NEWS AND NOTES. A most successful and enjoyable evening was given by Mr and Mrs Win. Porter at their residence, “Ranui,” Waipukurau, recently. Airs Porter received her guests, wearing a very smart model frock of salmon pink taffeta. The evening was spent with dancing and games. The spacious verandah, which was 'decorated with evergreens, laburnum, also green and yellow balloons, tastefully arranged, was an excellent space for dancing. The presence of the Kitt Orchestra, which came from Hastings, was much appreciated. The appetising supper was served in the dining-room, the artistic decorations being carried out in pink and mauve. At the Borough Council moating on Monday night, Cr. Fowler drew attention to the absence of the warning bell that had been agreed upon, from the garbage collector’s cart. Some people were in need of this reminder of the collector’s presence in their midst. The first load of fat lambs for the season was brought from Blackhead to Otane on Tuesday. The lambs, to the number of 200, were transported in two crates by one of the big motor lorries of Messrs John Winlove. and Sons. Cr. Fowler referred at the 'Borough Council meeting on Monday night to the fact that several motor-car mishaps had occurred of late. It was evident, he contended, from general comments, that speeding is too prevalent. The matter w’as referred to the attention of the. borough inspector. The rehearsal of “The Country Girl,” held on Monday night, was particularly successful. There was a large attendance, and excellent progress wag made. The exceedingly bright music has made a big appeal to members, and their enthusiasm is most marked. The opera will be staged early in April, at the latest. Mr J. McGreevy was the successful tenderer for the PorangahauAtnngaorapa mail service, and will take over at the beginning of next year. PERSONAL. The Right Rev. the Bishop of Waiapu arrived in Waipukurau yesterday morning, and is staying at th« Vicarage. He held a Confirmation service last night in St. Mary’s Church. Mr. Frank O’Donnell, who underwent an operation in the hospital «u Saturday, is making excellent progress towards recovery. In this citcumstance. his mother, Mrs W. F O’Donnell, was enabled tn leave on her return to Auckland yesterday, breaking the journey homeward at Palmerston North. h«r Mime town, where she has many rclduvea and friends.

Mr. Wilfred Hopkinson. a member of the “Press’’ staff, entered the hospital on Monday, having occasion to undergo an operation from which he is recovering very satisfactorily, Mr. W. B, Bell, manager of the Dominion Rubber Company, Kelanton, Malay Peninsula, and his wife, who have been spending n holiday m Waipukurau, left for the South yesterday. Mr and Mrs McMnrrav. who are leaving the district shortly, are to bo given a public farewell in the Public Hall. Porangahnii. on Friday next. The evening will take the form of a social and dance Mr. M. Kahn is at present an Inmate of the hospital, and Mr. Walker, of Dannerirke. is managing his drapery businfess in the interim PUKEORA SANATORIUM. CHRISTMAS GARDEN FETE A large and representative meeting was held in Waipukurau yesterday Waipukurau District Branch of the Red Cross Society, .to arrange details in connection with the annual Uhrsitmas Garden Fete at the Pukeora Sanatorium. Mrs E. D. Rice (president) presided. There were representatives present from Otane. Waipawa, and Takapau. Apologies were received from the Hastings and Porangahau Red Cross workers, and from Mesdames Todd (M’aipaWa), T. H. Lowry (Hastings), R. Harding (Alt. Vernon). P. Hunter (Porangahau), and J. D. Ormond (Wallingford). After some discussion it was decided to hold the fete on Saturday, December 10, to commence at 2 p.m The programme will follow on last year’s lines, the musical pare being left in the hands of Mrs McLean (Waipawa). The president (Airs Rice) and secretary (Mrs E. Broad! were instructed to arrange an orchestra for the afternoon tea Ihe tea committee will consist of the Waipukurau and Takapau Red Cross ladies. Mrs J. D. Ormond was thanked for a donation of three guineas to the funds. The following were arranged :—Hospital patients: Pairs bowling tournament, ladder golf, tailing the pig, ringing the peg, quoits, and stepping the chain. The. competitions will be managed by Canon Rice and Messrs Kibblewhite and Bates. Cnt patients: Motor-car wedding competition, most humorous telegram from a given word, visualising test guessing the weight of a cake, and tearing a paper animal. These competitions were left in the hands of various ladies. The secretary announced that there would be a first, second, and third prize for each event, to be donated by Airs Lowry and the Hastings Red Cross workers. The meeting decide*! that the same order of visiting days as observed during the current year, in continuation of activities that have been in progress ever since the establishment of the Sanatorium. The activities of the branch have been loyally maintained at a high mark of enthusiastic interest, and the members are looking forward to another equally satisfactory year in 1927. ’Two appreciative letters, read at yesterday’s meeting, from patients, tended to show how cheering Ihe efforts of the branch are as applied to the inmates of the Pukeora Sanatorium. It was nuggested bv the writers that perchance the pnolic is not fully cognisant of the extent and value of the service being rendered from week to week.
