OLD TRUE BLUE
EVENTFUL LIFE ENDS. (Per Press Association). Gore, November 24. An old warrior of the British Navy, who took part in historical engagements of the past generation, died at Gore Hospital in the person of Mr Samuel Ellis, aged 98 years. The late Mr Ellis joined the Navy as a boy. and was present at the storming of the heights of Alma in 1854, the taking of Odessa, and the fall of Sebastopol. He saw the charge of the Light Brigade. He participated in the events of the Indian Mutiny being at the relief of Lucknow. He saw service in China and the West Indies, and was one of the party which escorted the illfated Emperor Maximilian of Mexico to his castle. After further adventures an epileptic fitfi led to his discharge. Mr Ellis came to New Zealand in the '7o’s, after over- 30 years in the Navy, ultimately settling at Ferndale, near Gore, where he worked as a rabbiter. He retained his faculties to the last. He will be accorded a military funeral.
