Mr Alex Mill, secretary of the Egyptian General Mission, is visiting Hastings, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs K, C. Chamberlain.
Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P.. was tendered a complimentary social in tne St. Kilda Town Hall Dunedin, last night, to commemorate the adoption of the Summer Time Act.
The Rev. R. Gordon-Kirgan, formerly Presbyterian Minister at Helensville, has not accepted the call to become president of the Free Church of Tonga.
Mr John Bishop, of London, has been appointed conductor of the Royal Wellington Choral Society for 1928. Mr Bishop was born in South Australia, and has studied under noted musical teachers in Europe and in London. He is at present conductor of the Derby Orchestral Society.
A London cable reports the death, at the age of 84 years, of Mrs Arthur Wilson, wife of a Hull shipowner, who was the hostess of a house party at Tranbycroft in JB9l, when the famous game of baccarat was played, at which King Edward, then Prince of Wales, was present, and which led to a slander actioh, in which the Prince of Wales gave evidence.

The funeral of the late Mr Justice Alpers took place at Christchurch yesterday, and was very largely attended. The body had been taken down from Wellington, and rested in Canterbury College Hall until 10 o'clock when the cortege proceeded to Waimairi cemetery, where the Rev. H, S. Leach conducted the service. It was one of the longest funerals seen in Christchurch for many years. Many wreaths came from the North Island.
Mr. H. Brown the popular secretary of the Hastings Rugby SubUnion. met with a painful accident while returning yesterday afternoon from the Paki Paki freezing works. When the car he occupied was in the vicinity of the Hastings racecourse, a car coming from a side road collided with it. with the result that the impact caused his foot to be twisted and strained. He was driven home, and though the foot was much swollen he was. after treatment, soon able to get about with the aid of a stick.
The funeral of the late Mrs Marv Wellwood took place yesterday afternoon w’hen. after an impressive service, conducted bv the Rev, J. Hobbs, in St. Matthew’s Church, the body was conveyed to the Hastings Cemetery, followed by a large number of citizens representative of ell classes and creeds, who held the deceased lady in respect and high esteem. At the graveside the Rev. J. Hobbs conducted the burial service of the Church of England, and after the interment the mound was covered with a mass of beautiful flowers as tributes to the memory of a good woman.
Colonel Percy Morland ActonAdams. D. 5.0.. a well-known North Canterbury sheepfarmer, has died at the age of 49 years. At the time of his death he was a member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union. He was placed in eomnjand of the C.Y.C Squadron in the Expeditionary Force in August. 1914. with the rank of major, and saw service in Gallipoli, Egypt, and Palestine, being promoted to second in command of the Canterbury Mounted Regiment. He was awarded the D.S.O. and the Order of the Nile. At the time of his death he was in command of the 3rd N.Z.M.R, Brigade, with the rank of colonel.
