SWIMMING
HERETAUNGA CLUB OPENS LAST EVENING’S CARNIVAL, A LARGE ATTENDANCE. The 1927-28 swimming season so far as the Heretaunga Club is concerned, was officially opened at the Maddison baths last evening when the twicepostponed carnival attracted a large number of enthusiasts. “1 wish to impress on you the importance and necessity of learning to swim. There are far too many deaths by drowning in this country,” stated Mr. A. D Ross, president 'if the club, in declaring the season open. “Personally, I consider it the duty of the Government to see that swimming is included in the curriculum of the schools, particularly those schools which have the baths attached. Swimming should be part of the education of the children and the authorities should see that this was done.’’
The speaker then went on to say that the club was one of the most successful in the Dominion. It was not established merely to accumulate funds but for the benefit of the town. Th© money was used for the encour agement of swimming. Those present were given a good evening's entertainment, ng despite the low temperature of the water, there were large entries for the various events. The arrangements of the committee worked without a hitch and excellent finishes, as was the case in numerous events, created quite a wave of enthusiasm.
