ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

An unusual accident occurred at Portland on Thursday evening, when Norman Lightband, aged 50 years, of Grove street, Edendale, Auckland, fell down a bank while smoking a pipe, and the force of the fall drove the stein of his pipe through his gullet a distance of 2} inches, and then snapped off, inflicting a dangerous wound. An operation was peformed at Whangarei Hospital on Friday and the steam removed. The patient at present is making progress.

When Andrew Conlan was arested in Christchurch on November 12 for for drunkenness he was seen to be very ill, and a remand was granted until Tuesday next, in order that lie might undergo medical treatment. On Friday the police were advised to get into touch with Conlan’s relatives. On Sunday morning his death was reported from hospital. There is a. possibility that the man’s name is Condan, as a. piece of paper found among his belongings bears that name. Conlan told a nurse at the hospital that he had no relatives in New Zealand. The coroner has ordered a post-mortem examination.

Shortly after 8 o’clock on Saturday night, Jonathan Hague, of « Christchurch. was found by his wife dead, hanging by a cord in a bedroom at his residence. Hague was a labourer, 40 years of age, with a wife and four children, and had been out of regular employment for the past sixteen months.

A man of 62 years of age. Frederick Sibbe. attempted to throw himself qff Grafton Bridge at about halfpast one. Two men who were crossing the bridge saw Sibbe climbing up on to the parapet. 'They ran to him and dragged him back, and held on to him until some other pedestrians canie to their assistance. Sibbe has onlv recently come to Auckland from Wellington, and had been drinking. He pleaded guilty at the Police Court to a charge of attempting to commit suicide. Senior-Sergeant McCarthy. in asking for a remand until Monday, said accused had been drinking and he had been having difficulty in finding employment. A remand was granted.

Isaac Wyber, aged 60 motor lorrv driver, residing at 40 South road, Masterton, was found hanging in the wash-house of his residence. He rose at 6 o’clock ,and two hours later the body was found hanging bv a rope from one of the rafters. Wyber was married and has a grown-up family.

Near Ongarue on Saturday, a car containing four adults and three children, driven b.v J. Jones, went over a bank into the river. The car was badlv damaged, but the oeccupants. though injured, miraculously escaped death. Jones, N Christianson, and one of the children, were tendered unconscious temporarily, but recovered later. Two of Jones’ children suffered painful body injuries, and Mrs Christianson sprained ankles and bruises.

A lad of 14 years, William Wilson, residing at Kamo, was investigating a detonator with a darning needle on Saturday, when the detonator exploded. blowing off the tops of the fingers of the left hand, with which he was holding the cap. Hi s left hand and abdomen were also hurt. He was reported yesterday to be progressing well in hospital.
