PACIFIC CABLE BOARD
APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN.
FURTHER ABORTIVE DISCUS-
(Received 21. 1.35 p. m London, November 20. There has been a further abortive discussion among the partner Governments. regarding the appointment of a chairman of the Pacific Cable Board. Apparently they consider the expense involved in the appointment inopportune until the respective functions of the beam and the cables are more clearly defined. The aggregate traffic between Britain and Australia and New Zealand has increased, but beam competition has affected the Board’s revenue, and is likely to continue to attract that class of traffic demanding speed and cheapness though the cables are more secret and accurate.
It is impossible at present to determine whether beam is permanently competitive or complementary to the cables.—(Sydney “Sun” cable.)
