INTERESTING INTELLIGENCE STATISTICS

Sydney, Nov. 18. The annual report of the Department of Education shows that expenditure for the year was £4,359,000 —the highest tor any year in the history of the Department. There were 9559 teachers under the Department, a strength more satisfactory than it has been for a considerable time. The effective enrolment was 319,835. During the period 1924-26. a mental test was carried out on 1912 schoolboys. Of this total 22 per cent, were regarded as having an intelligent quotient of 100 or more, 36) per cent, from 90 to 100. or a total of 58) per cent of normal intelligence. In all 24.7 per cent, had a quotient of from 80 to 90 and are regarded as retarded; 6 per cent had a quotient of from 75 to 85. one-half per cent, were listed at from 70 to 75. and F, per cent, under 70. It was considered therefore that about 10 per cent, were definitely, or probably feebleminded and about 15 per cent, fit for education at a suitable school.
