FLOWER DISPLAY
ROSES & SWEET PEAS 4 — HASTINGS SOCIETY'S SHOW. HIGH STANDARD OF QUALITY. Th« Ro*e and Sweet Pea Show, held under the auspices of the Hastings Horticultural Society, opened this afternoon in the Hastings Assembly Hall, and will be continued to-night, when in the course of the evening the orchestra which played so charmingly during the afternoon will contribute to the public enjoyment of an evening among the flowers.
The entry for roses numbered 840, and were it not for the fact that many entrants were obliged to withdraw a« the result of hot weather succeeding the recent rain, the entry would have been exceptional. I’he season was favourable for roses except for the past week, and those that were displayed presented a glorious picture, many of them being perfect specimen!*. /
The sweet peas were up to the standard except some that had been afected by the rain and cold, and those in the decorative classes were beautiful.
Some 28 boxes of nemesis, exhibited bv the children of the various schools, were on view, but the season was rather too early, and they had not flowered into that mass of manvooloured bloom which is so much admired. The society intends to carry on thia display again next year, when the plants win be shown at a further advanced stage in the full pride of their prismatic colouring. The miscellaneous collection makes splendid show, whilst the decora“tive classes, especially the tables, mantelpieces., baskets and vases, were the centre of attraction. Mrs Tosswill had on view for exhibition, a fine exposition of cut flowers and another interesting exhibit was a lupin hybrid, with most unusual col-ouring—maize-blue, red 1 and white. Amongs the trade exhibits. Messrs w. H. Walker and Sons have a stand at the lower end of the hall, showing a collection of a hundred varieties cf roses, as well as pot plants ano amaryllis, which were much admired. Mr G. D. Wilson also had a trade display on the stage of roses. 250 varieties of which he has under cultivation, together with flowering pot plants, ferns and other blooms, all of which formed an attraction to delight the spectators. Following were the judges:— Decorative: Mrs *H. M. Campbell and Mrs Oscar Krogh. Roses: Mrs R. Holt, Napier. Sweet peas: Mrs W. Wright. Miscellaneous, vegetable and children's classes: Mr G. D. Wilson. The judge of the sweetpeas says that the junior classes were ahead of the open classes in purity and colour. THE PRIZE LIST. The prize list is as follows;— ROSES. Open. 18 roses, distinct.—S.
