NEW FOOD FISH
LIKE THE WABEHOU.
The Chief Inspector of Fisheries, Mr A. E. Hefford, stated that a new species of food fish was recently brought in by an Auckland fishing boat which had visited the hapuka and schnapper fishing grounds in the neighbourhood of Mayor Island, Bay of Plenty. The species has never be fore been described or named among the numerous fishes known to inhabit New Zealand waters. Specimens are being scientifically examined by Mr Griffin, of the Auckland Museum, to whom the task of finding a scientific name for the fish will fall.
The new fish appears to bo abundant the fishermen stating that they could have filled the boat with them if they had cared to do so. They were actually fishing for hapuka and schnapper at the time on a reef about 90 fathoms down, with 200 fathoms in the vicinity. The fish somewhat re sembles the warehou in appearance and its edible qualities, which were tested by the chief inspector of fisheries, were found to be excellent. In flavour it somwhat resembled the hapuka or groper, but is rather firmer. The fish caught wire of '.rood size, averaging n> live tn lei’ pounds in weight.
