BOXING.
JOHNNY LECKIE FOR HASTINGS MATCHED WITH DUKE * MADDOX, Despite the fact that it was announced that Duke Maddox, the wellknown Hastings boxer, had decided to retire, he has now been persuaded by the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association to have at least one more contest before giving up the game. He has agreed to box a ten-round contest for the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association in the Hastings Municipal Theatre on January 2nd next, and his opponent will be none other than the present featherweight champion of the Dominion, Johnny Leckie, of Dunedin. Leckie has finally agreed to the contest and the articles were despatched! for his signature this morning. Boxing enthusiasts know that Leckie is one of the most brilliant boxers New Zealand has unearthed for many years, and this, his first appearance in this district, as a professional, should cause quite a stir. All preliminary arrangements for the contest have now been completed.
