THE PICTURE HOUSES
MUNICIPAL. The tale of Don Juan has intrigued almost the whole world since the Spanish monk, Gabriel Tellez (15701618) wrote the original Don Juan story, with the idea of painting a moral in favour of the spiritual life. His story, “El Burlador de Sevilla” (The Deceiver of Seville), concerns one Don Juan Tenorio, enemy of God, who lived a life of luxury during the reign of Peter the Cruel. Attempting to abduct Giralda, the beautiful daughter of the Governor of Seville, Don Juan is challenged by her father. In a duel, the father is killed. Some time after, on the way to a banquet, Don Juan passes the cemetery where the murdered man rests under a marble statue. The youth mockingly invites the statue to accompany him to the feast. The statue comes to life, confronts the unrepentent Don Juan, and. as agent of an offended Deity, commits the traducer to the flames of everlasting hell. John Barrymore, in the title role of the film version of the tale, has achieved the outstanding triumph of his screen career; a rich, warm, dazzling embodiment of the greatest of all great lovers. The ladies upon whom his love is lavished include: Mary Astor, Estelle Ta ? lor, Jane Winton, Helena d’Algy, Myrna Loy, Helee Costello.
