BACHELOR M.P.’s.
MISS WILKINSON’S VIEWS.
London, Oct. 14
Interesting comment is being made on the fact that the new leader of the Conservative party of Canada, Hon. R. B. Bennett, is a bachelor, but any idea that he is thus better able to serve his country apparently finds little sympathy here.
Miss Ellen C. Wilkinson. Labour M.P., tells the “Evening Standard” that a politicians wife is a “definite economic and political asset who takes all the worry off him, is bright and cheerful and looks after his friends and constituents whom he does not wish to meet.”
Further, Miss W'lkinson says. “Most of the wives of politicians are now doing the work their husbands do not want to do and yet they never have time to see their husbands. If. however, a married woman becomes leader of a party, it is obvious that her attention would be distracted because she would be expected to fulfil all the duties of a wife, mother and housekeeper as if she had all her time to herself, and yet remain a first-class politician. May be Canada has a race of women who want to strike out for themselves and are not willing to be echoes, in which case, Mr. Bennett probably is wise.”
