TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES
FEDERATION MEETING AT NAPIER.
A conference of importance to tramwaymen, the annual meeting of the New Zealand Tramway Employees’ Federation was opened in Napier yesterday morning, delegates being present from all the tramway centres of the North Island and Christchurch. The delegates present were Messrs C. L. Hunter H. Bogers. C. Hobbs (Wellington). J. J. Nixon. J Biddell (Auckland),’ E. H. Spa’ckrnan (Napier) R. Northover (Wanganui), T. Florence (New Plymouth). McCallum'and Webb (Christchurch)’. Before settling down to the business of the conference a civic reception was extended by His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Vigor Brown), who expressed the hop e that the stay of the visitors would be a most enjoyable one, and that their deliberations would be of benefit to themselves and to their employers.
Mr J. Riddell, vice-president of the delegates, thanking the Mayor, for (bis welcome, and stating that it was always their endeavour to help their employers wherever they could in forwarding the system of control, and generally providing an efficient service for the public.
The business of the conference is all taken in committee Yesterday a good deal of discussion took place on the proposed amendments to the Arbitration Act. during which the proposals were strongly condemned. Another matter that took up a good deal of time was one of conveniences at terminii. the view of the conference being ’that there should be such conveniences at every tramway and omnibus terminus. The conference resumes this morning. and will continue probably till Friday. •
