MINER “BURST” IN DANCE HALL. Johannesburg, Nov. 4. A miner burst here—the first known cast in which anyone has emulated th e frog of Aesop’s fables. A single man lie was a great favourite with the mining community. Always ready to lend a hand at dances, he was helping to decorate a dance hall by blowing up tiny balloons. Suddenly he called to a mate: “I’ve swallowed one of these balloons. Suppos e it won’t hurt mol” His friend laughed. “How can it?” he asked. “It’s so small.” The- dance went on. Late at night, the miner complained of sharp internal pains. After thre e hours’ agony, he collapsed. Rushed to hospital, he was operated on, but died a few minutes after being removed from the open ating table. The inquest disclosed that gases generated in the stomach and bowels had blown up the balloon. Then it had burst rupturing the stomach and inteestines.
