EDUCATION AMENDMENT
A CLAUSE OBJECTED TO.
N.Z.E.I. MAKES A PROTEST.
Wellington, Nov. 15.
At a meeting of the executive of tho New Zealand Educational Institute held to consider the Education Amendment Bill now before Parliament, strong opposition was taken to the clause in the bill providing for the imposition of a fine up to £11) on any teacher guilty of wilful disobedience of any lawful command or of neglect of duty, such fine to be deducted from the teachers’ salary. It was pointed out that this clause cast an unnecessary reflection upon the teaching service as a whole, and in view of the high esteem in which the profession was held by the public tho implied suggestion that it was necessary to discipline its members by a system of fines was quite uncalled for. There were already available adequate and effective means of safeguarding the efficiency and good conduct of the service.
It was decided to enter a strong protest against a proposal which, in its implications, would tend to lower the prestige" of tho profession in the eyes of the public.
