PETROL TAX

DOMINION'S TRANSPORT NEEDS

ROYAL COMMISSION PROPOSED.

(Per Press Association!

Wellington, Nov. 16.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce, after giving consideration to the provisions of the Motor Spirits Taxation Bill, has forwarded a resolution to the Premier protesting, for a number of stated reasons, against the haste with which the Bill was introduced and passed into law. It is not satisfied that the Dominion is justified in going headlong into the construction of roads before a coordinated policy has been laid down. The whole subject should have been considered with a view to defining a general policy of transport by rail, steamer, and road. It urges the setting up of a Royal Commission composed of practical men under the presidency of a Judge for thorough consideration and exhaustive inquiry into th© transport needs of the Dominion.

NATIONALISATION URGED.

VIEWS OF A.S.R.S. EXECUTIVE.

The Executive Counci] of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand, at the quarterly meeting now in progress, passed resolutions drawing the attention of members to the ever-increasing traffic secured by motors to the detriment of the railway service, which might affect the livelihood of some servants. The belief was expressed that good results would be obtained if the employees reciprocated with traders who patronised th e railways. The resolution urges on the Government fne economic necessity of nationalising the transport industry.
