BREAKING THE LAW

HASTINGS MAGISTRATE’S COURT. TO-DAY’s"~CASES. The regular sittings of the Hastings Magistrate’s Court was held this morning, when Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., dealt with the following cases:— John Hourigan was charged with being found in the Albert Hotel after hours on November 12th last. He was fined £l, costs 10/-. John Cosgrove and Francies Cosgrove wore also charged with being found in the Albert Hotel on November sth. Each was fined £l, costs 10/-.

STATIONARY CARS IN STREETS.

Joan Evans (Mr. Kelly) and Winifred G. Wilson, who ‘pleaded guilty, were ordered to pay Court costs amounting to 10/- for allowing a car to stand in the street at a greater distance than two feet from the kerbing. “ These cases are brought up more for a warning,” stated the Borough Inspector. John Wright pleaded not guilty to a similar charge, and he, too, was convicted and ordered to pay court costs. CASES ABOUT MOTOR CARS. Driving a motor vehicle without having number plates affixed cost Frederick W. Medcalf 10/-, costs 10/-. For riding a motor-cycle on the footpath cost Vincent Unvericht 20/-, costs 10/-. Sladcn A. Fryer was fined £2, costs 10/-, on a charge of driving a motor car at a speed deemed dangerous to. the public. For having no rear light on his motor-car cost Len W. Dunn 10/-, costs 10/-. UNREGISTERED NURSERY. Under the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act, N. J. Adamson (orchard inspector) proceeded against William Greening, on a charge of having failed to register his nursery. The defendant was fined £l, costs 10/-. WANDERING CATTLE. E. W. Strang was charged on the information of the County Ranger with permitting a cow to wander along Southland road. In connection with the same circumstances the defendant was charged with that on November 9th he behaved in an offensive manner in Southland road. A plea of not guilty was entered on each charge. Mr. T. B. McNeil appeared for the complainant, and Mr. W. McLean for the defendant. Strang was convicted on the charge of allowing cattle to wander, and fined £l, costs £1 10/6 on that count. ‘‘Very reluctantly I will dismiss the other charge,” stated His Worship, who would not allow costs in this case. CIVIL LIST. Judgment by default was given in the following cases: —J. Wallace v. Gladys Austin £l2 1/9, costs £2 7/-; C. G. R. Wright v. W. Johansen £4 4/-, costs £1 4/6.
