LAWLESS CHICAGO
POLICE WITH GUNS EXPOSED.
STREETS UNSAFE AT NIGHT.
New York, Nov. 13
Chicago City is threatened with a resumption of the crime wave, which reached its apex a year or two ago. The police have been ordered to carry their guns exposed, in order to beat gunmen on the draw. The conditions are forcing prominent leaders in politics and business to start reform movements and to engage bodyguards, who pose as secretaries. The Illinois Vigilance Association states that the decadence of Chicago morals makes the streets unsafe at night. Women are terrorised at the possibility of being kidnapped, taken in automobiles to lonely spots and assaulted. The most recent case is that of the murder of a young Wv.aan, who on Saturday was hurled from an automobile when she repulsed her attackers. In some instances girls are kidnapper from escorts. The association believes a net of corruption has been spread over the vice industry, which corrupts the police and employs steady counsel and bondsmen. FOUR MURDERS. Four murders occurred within the Metropolitan district to-day and four other persons were hurt in crimes of violence. Edward Dunsworth, chauffeur, was found shot and dying on the steps of a local hospital. Egidio Roumania was stabbed to death, and two persons are being held for the crime. Mrs. Martlyse Mays is dying in a local hospital. She was found shot, but refused to disclose the name of her assailant. The body of an unidentified man was found in a creek, apparently murdered. Four persons were hurt in a stabbing affray, including a woman.—(A. and N.Z.)
