“POT POURRI”

ELOCUTIONARY RECITAL.

Appreciation of character, clarity of diction, and great variety in the sketches were the outstanding characteristics of the recital by the pupils of Miss M, A. MacDonald in the Napier Municipal Theatre on Saturday night. It was evident that many of the pupils had decided gifts for dramatic and musical work though, of course, must credit must go to Miss MacDonald herself who has brought these gifts forward. Probably the outstanding recital of the evening was the “Balcony Scene” from “Borneo and Juliet,” presented by Miss Moana Hawthorne and Miss Alexa Archer, which the audience keenly appreciated. By special request Miss May MacDonald gave a dramatic recital entitled “The Capture of Morengo.” For this an encore was at once demanded, and she replied with a demonstration of how a little girl would recite “Casabianca” at a Sunday school concert—entirely different styles of pieces that ably demonstrated Miss MacDonald's abilities, ft may possibly be invidious to select names from the programme, but among those worthy of special mention were Miss Dorothea Downes, Miss Betty Alexander, Mr Ronald Doig, Miss Joyce Annan, Miss Alice Holroyd, and Miss Joan Kirkpatrick. For the musical items Miss Winifred McCarthy played the accompaniments.
