OBITUARY.
MR. J. W. POYNTON, S.M

Auckland, Nov. 14. Mr, J. W. Poynton, Stipendiary Magistrate at Auckland, died at his residence on Sunday night, aged 65 years.
Born in Victoria in 1861, Mr. Poynton was brought to New Zealand by his parents two years later. After following the goldmining occupation for 10 years, Mr. Poynton took up the law. In 1895 he was appointed magistrate at Invercargill, becoming Public Trustee five years later. In 1910 he was appointed Secretary to the Treasury and Superintendent of the Advances to Settlers Office, a breakdown in health leading to his re-appqintment to the magisterial bench in 1913. After serving at Palmerston North for five years he came to Auckland, where he was granted six months’ leave in September. MRS, H. GUTHRIE-SMTI’H. Great regret will be felt by all at the news of the death of Mrs. Herbert Guhrie-Smith, which occurred on the Oronsay en route to New Zealand. Mrs. Guthrie-Smith and her daughter had been on a visit to England and on the voyage back the deceased lady took ill, dying two days before the ship reached Australia. The wife of Mr Herbert Guthrie-Smith, of Tutira, the late lad.y resided partly in Scotland but chiefly in New Zealand. Much sympathy will be felt for the husband and (laughter in their bereavement.
