REVIEW OF MONTH’S WORK ROAD MAINTENANCE. ' REPAIRS TO BRIDGES Improved weather conditions have enabled the staff of the Hawks's Bay County Council to pay greater attention to many works requiring attention on the various back county roads. A review of the monthly report submitted to the council to-day by the engineer shows that already a number of important works are hi hand. Of these none will be more welcome to settlers than the grading and forming of many of the clay roads in the Waikare riding. Several of the distant streams are now being bridged, which will obviate the using of many crossings. Locally the principal works are the preparation for tar-sealing on both the Stortford Lodge-Fernhill and Taradale-Napier roads. The strengthening of both the Redcliffe and Pakowhai bridges is to be undertaken shortly. The following extracts from the report will show the various works in hand in the respective ridings - CLIVE AND HAVELOCK Drain cleaning has been carried out during the month in the Clive riding and good progress was made. The main drain at Whakatu is now being attended to after which the work of widening the muddy creek, where necessary* will continue 'The dressing shed in Farndon Park has been constructed and the grounds cleaned up and fences attended to. Plans and specifications have been prepared of 120 chains of cement concrete naving in two contracts at Riverside and Whakatu. Plans were prepared of the pronosed new bridge on the PuknhnHnvelock North road on the boundary between the town district and the county. A contract has been let for redecking the Tuki Tuki-Waimarama bridge and work will be continued shortly. The deviation on the Wainmrarna road at the end of the Big Flat, which was not completer! before the winter, will he re-started next month. Plans and specification's have been prepared for a Public Works grant for 50 chains of metalling on the Hawea road and when approved work will be commenced.
HERETAUNGA - MARAEKAKAHO
Plans are being prepared for a new concrete bridge over the old Ngaruroro stream at the Longlands woolshed. Omahu road, for a distance of 80 chains, has been prepared for tarsealing and a start witu the asphalt work was made last week. Repairs were done to the decking of the Pakowhai bridges and plans are being prepared to strengthen the thre R >- rua3 spans by means of stool plates. Tenders have being called for the reconstruction of the Maraekakaho stream bridge. While the work is in progress traffic will have to be diver ted thiough the old river crossing whore it might bo necessary to build two temporary low-levod bridges. Slips have been cleared on the Kereur and Big Hill roads and general sur fac 0 work carried out. MEEANEE AND OKAWA. The Taradale road is being scari fled and regraded in readiness for tar-sealing. The concrete culvert at the borough boundary has been completed and when sufficiently seasoned will be .opened for traffic. Owing to the congestion of vehicles at tunes the filling under the old bridge could not be done until traffic was able to make use of the culvert. Metalling is being done on the Na-pier-Taihape road at Willowford and also at Tununui. The steel girders for the strengthening of the Redcliffe bridge have arrived and the work will be put in hand as soon as the bridge * s available. Good progress is being made with the widening of the cutting leading to the river at Mangatutu, which should be completed next week., Decking repairs have been done io the three bridges near Okawa on the Shcrenden road. I’ETANE AND PUUKAWA. Scraifying. regrading and metal repairs have been carried out on Titiokura. The road through Bay View township is being put in order for tar-seuling. Repairs have been carried out on the main road between Whirinaki and the lagoon bridge, it being now considerably wider and on a higher level. The main Te Aute road has beep graded continuously, metal patching being done where necessary. Tenders are being called for a small road deviation and new culverts at Te Hauke to improve the alignment and replace the decayed timber structure. The Te Mahanga Settlement road and the Poukawa road have been graded and the grass verges removed. " PUKETITIRI AND WAIKARE. The trucks will commenc c metalling on tho Hot Springs road when available. Repairs have been effected to the bridge in Pukotitiri township. Metalling was required to be done between Greenmeadows and the Apley turnoff. A power grader has been at work cleaning up the clay roads working in Mankaharuru. Waiwaka and Arapawanui districts. A start has been made with the erection of the Pouaraua bridge, while the crossing at the Waikare river on the Inland road has been repaired. This will be used as a outlet until tho above bridge is built.
