THE ROOKS AGAIN
ARE THEY A NUISANCE? COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. “I am not satisfied that the council wishes to see the end of the rooks," said Or. T. E. Crosse at to-day’s meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council, “Persongllv I think that they do more good than harm. This year 1 have seen very little of them, and I find that when they visit me in large numcNrs there are plenty of wire worms about.” Cr. F. B. Logan: The Minister seems to think that we are here to eradicate the rooks. If we think that they are not a nuisance we should leave the matter alone. Cr. N. P. Eriksen: The rooks do a lot of harm. 1 put in about four acres of maize at Plumpton Park and they cleaned it up properly. There is no doubt that the settlers about Fernhill have just cause for complaint. Cr Crosse: I don’t think that any drastic action would be wise. The above discussion arose over a letter from the Minister of Agriculture asking why the council was not taking steps to abate the rook nuisance. No action was taken.
