In a letter to the press concerning the Rowley disqualification case, Mr. George Gould, chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, says: “With one unimportant exception, the whole of the evidence was taken in the presence of the whole of the defendants, and that one exception in the presence of the owner. The whole of the evidence was taken down word for word by shorthand and typewritten, and the defendants had the fullest opportunity of reading, explaining, or refuting it. At a meeting of the district committee the presence of a steward on November 7th, who had been absent on November Sth, in no way prejudiced the case of the defendants as the hearing on the 7th was opened by the reading of the whole of the evidence taken on the Sth.’* R. S. Bagby, trainer, and A. R. Parker, jockey, appealed against disqualification for alleged corrupt practices in connection with the running of Rowley on November Sth. A conference of representatives of the principal racing clubs of Australia decided that the race for the King’s Cup should be a handicap •vent, the maximum weight being 9.5 and the minimum 7.0, and that the added money should be not more than £2OOO and not less than £lOOO. The race is to be run in each State in turn.
