RED POLLS FAVOURED. VViTH the onward trend of dairy- ’’ lug, talk of the dual puipose cow is a frequently recurring subject, states a writer in the "New Zealand Farmer,” Un rich, ideal dairying kind, the Milking Shorthorn of the Northern counties of England has no "i but ou a large urea in the Dominion. almost e.velus.iely devoted to dairy fanning, the Red Poll may be regarded us the ideal dual purpose beast. ■ Originating in the Eusttru counties of England, the breed has gradually obtained a footing in many countries. At present the Red Poll is making steady heaway in the Dominion. Like the Polled Angus, the Red Poll is a splendid forager, and thrives well on somewhat hard conditions,

Red Polls are remarkably prepotent; this characteristic , lias been strikingly exemplified in South Africa, in which country the breed is in favour. Mr Tliistleton Smith, an English farmer who recently visited South Africa, says: “1 saw first, second, third and fourth crosses with the. Africander cattle, and the extraordinary proportion of seemingly purebred Rod Polls astonished me. From Capetown to Victoria Falls. Red Poll cattle are in favour, and South African agriculturists are unable to obtain nil the purebred bulls they need. So popular have they become in that country that they are termed triple-purpose cattle. They are good working cattle, they are ideal for milk, beef and trek.” There is room for such cattle in North Auckland. Anyone in search of dual purpose cattle could not go wrong to adopt tho breed.
