David Hughes received a shattered hand and head injuries and suffered other wounds through the explosion of gelignite which he was using to mine ligmite at Balfour yesterday. Hughes later had the hand amputated at the Gore Hospital and was sent to Invercargill for treatment of a damaged eye His parents reside in South Dunedin.
