MELBOURNE v. TATRANAKI. HOME TEAM BATS FIRST. New Plymouth, Feb. 18. The cricket match Melbourne v. Taranaki commenced in tine weather and on a good wicket and outfield. Kingston won the toss and elected to bat. Warwick Armstrong captained the visitors. Lash and Naismith opened, the former taking the first strike to Ransford. Ebeling bowling at the other end. Naismith scored freely and at 21 Lash was caught left handed by Armstrong off Ebeling 21-1-5. Monaghan followed, both playing confidently. At 38, Wood relieved Ebeling and Naismith drove him to the boundary, bringing 40 up for 50 minutes’ play. Naismith continued to score freely, hitting Ransford for four and six. Johnston relieved Ransford at 66 and Naismith reached the halfcentury off him. T, Armstrong relieved Wood and Monaghan brought the century up with a single off Armstrong, as the result of 95 minutes’ play. At 12.50 the score stood at 1 21 for one wicket.
